I think first the definition of marketing must be considered. Then the intent or purpose of marketing in the church must be discussed as well.

You can even go further to decide if the reference to marketing is connected to propserity in the church... Overall, a very specific topic, which requires much thought and careful attention.

"Marketing" isn't in the Bible because the term was coined in the 20th century. For that matter, the terms "communication" isn't in the Bible either even though Bible folk did engage in it. You're getting on shaky ground when you try to demonize anything in this manner. Furthermore, don't judge an industry based on some bad practices. Yes, there are some really bad marketers out there but our marketplace would not function well without marketing.

So, having said this, did "marketing" as a concept or practice exist in Bible ministry? Yes! Wikipedia: "The term marketing concept holds that achieving organizational goals depends on knowing the needs and wants of target markets and delivering the desired satisfactions" Successful marketing puts the needs of the consumer ahead of the needs of the organization. Isn’t this what Philippians 2:3-4 is all about? What are the needs of humanity? Primarily mankind needs redemption and fellowship with the Lord our God. How do we achieve this with our limited resources? Marketing MUST be a component if, given our limitations, we are going to successfully carry out the great commission.

(Incidentally, the suggestion of visiting someone personally as opposed to creating a brochure does NOT mean that you have disengaged yourself from the marketing process. You have only changed the promotional channel. In that sense it is no different than having your insurance sold through an agent as opposed to buying it online.)

If the message of a given church is not reaching the community, don’t blame the marketing discipline. If anything this highlights the need for the ministry to reassess its marketing strategy (hopefully, it has one) and modify it accordingly in order to better fulfill the great commission.
